Buying Mcneil / Intro to "Fabulous Finds" and "Drab 2 Fab"

To make things easier, before moving, we sold as much of the big stuff as we could. Living room furniture, dining room furniture + my buffet that I loved so dearly, brand new FRONT load washers & dryers, refrigerator, etc. The thought behind all this was it was less stuff to move, plus I could shop for NEW furniture that was a perfect fit for the new house. This would have been a great plan, but of course, things didn’t go the way they were supposed to.

Everything went so smoothly when we sold the Whitworth house. Our Realtor was awesome and really did everything he could to help us. Our Mcneil house realtor, not so much. First of all, who doesn’t have their email sent to their phone.. especially when you tell me it’s your “preferred form of communication.” I shouldn’t have to call you to ask if you received my email. Secondly, either answer the phone when I call, or call me back in a reasonable time frame. 1-2 days later is not reasonable. Thirdly, if you say to meet at the house “around 9ish” and you don’t show up until 9:30 that’s NOT considered 9ish. *deep breaths*

Upon negotiating the purchase price for the house, we agreed that the seller would pay closing cost, up to $4,000. She told us, and I quote, “John, Heather, don’t even worry about that, there is no way closing will be more than that!” Awesome! It was the last we thought about that. So, after a month of getting everything ready for closing and having horrible communications, on her side, it was finally closing day. Yay! Furniture shopping tomorrow… or so I thought. We arrive at her office and began signing the eight million closing papers. Towards the end she says, “Ok, and this is the amount you owe, which you brought the certified check for.” John David and I looked at each other, dumbfounded, and then back at her. My response, “Huh?” She slides the paper over and says “yea, the closing costs went over by 2960.” My response “Oh, twenty nine dollars?” John David gulps and says “no, twenty nine HUNDRED.” We both just started at her blankly and then she said “Oh my gosh, I forgot to tell you about this. I found out last Friday and it was the weekend, and I was leaving to go……..” I couldn’t hear her speaking anymore because I wanted to hurl across the table and CHOKE her. How are you NOT going to tell us about a twenty nine HUNDRED dollar overage that WE have to pay? Furthermore, we need a certified check? Where do I even get one of those? Oh my Jesus. I could feel the tears forming.

Long story short, there was no way around it. It’s what we owed and just because she forgot to tell us didn’t mean anything. Then I asked her about the air conditioner. See, the coils needed changing because the unit wasn’t cooling the house down. “Oh” she says. “I’ll call about that right now”. OH MY GOD. This pregnant girl is going to throw a complete temper tantrum. She comes back and says “I’m so sorry, but they can’t come and change them until Thursday. Today is Monday. It’s July. In Alabama. And I’m Pregnant. Lethal combination!

Thankfully, we bought a small window unit AC a few years ago when we first moved into Whitworth and never got rid of it. They finally got the coils changed, only for us to realize, the coils were not the problem. The unit is too small for the house and just can’t keep up with the Alabama heat. The homeowner’s insurance wouldn’t cover replacing it because the unit WORKED. There was definitely no way we could afford to replace it, ESPECIALLY now that we have spent every bit of extra money we had on CLOSING costs. Soo the unit would run all day, the house stayed about 84 degrees and the electric bill was over 400 dollars for every summer month. The window unit was too small to put in any of the open rooms so we kept it in the bedroom. I basically lived in my bedroom until mid September.

The air in my car also went out the first of July. John David started driving it to work and leave me with the truck since he went to work and came home from work before and after the sun rose and set.

When it seemed like nothing else worse could happen, we found out that I do not qualify to go under John David’s insurance. Between the time we were accepted at Mobile and the time he started work, their insurance policy changed. Pregnancy was now considered PRE-EXISTING. I had been paying my insurance through my previous employer for 4 months now, at over 300 dollars a month, and now I had no choice but to continue paying until the baby was born. As if that wasn’t bad enough, since I wasn’t under the resident’s insurance, I could no longer have the baby for free at the hospital, which meant I had three months to come up with 20 percent of the delivery cost. Seriously?

As if I wasn’t an emotional wreck already, this about put me over the edge. We had a plan. We had a budget. We had paid off all credit cards. Things were going to be great. Now, I have no job, sick as a dog, and have more bills than we have ever had. Like I said in my last blog, I cried. Every day. Even if I had a day where I wasn’t super sick, I couldn’t go anywhere or do anything simply because I didn’t have the money.

Finally the long awaited month of November rolled around. This was the first month since I got pregnant that we weren’t basically throwing money down the drain on healthcare. Of course, now I owe the hospital around $4,000 from delivery of Khloe since it wasn’t a “routine” cesarean. The total bill was almost $29,000. A normal cesarean is about $3,500. Thankfully I had good insurance and I only had to pay $4,000, but still. We’ll be playing catch up for quite some time to get back to a comfortable place.

So, the reason for this blog is to give you an idea of why I haven’t posted any pics of the house décor. If I could go back in time, we would have rented 8 U-hauls before I sold all my furniture. I had no idea things were going to turn out the way they did.

Decorating here has been a super slow process for many reasons, but mostly because I could never replace what I sold. Over the past few months, on a very limited budget, I have begun to try and fill the house. Desperation often leads to inspiration! One piece at a time, I have been scourging my local Goodwill’s, Thrift stores and Department stores for “fabulous finds” and things I could turn from “Drab 2 Fab.” This is what my next few blog entries will be about. Hopefully, it will give a few of you crafty girls (and maybe a few of you who are on a very limited budget, like me) some inspiration to get creative.

A very wise woman, Barbara Scruggs, once told me “it’s short term discomfort for long term happiness.” One day I will be able to afford very nice things, but even then, I will still love me some Thrift stores! One person’s trash…. Another person’s treasure!!!

I’ll be posting “The Dresser” in a few hours. I’m super excited about it.

Love you guys!

Heather

Sweet Home Alabama

After fourteen long days, we finally moved into our new house. Many thanks to our amazing family for making our homelessness transition a little easier.

As with most things with us, things didn’t go exactly as planned: First we had the delayed move in, next there were problems with the AC unit and for the first 3 days the only air in the house was from a small window unit we’ve had in storage for the past few years, and not to forget some unexpected closing costs that our realtor “forgot” to tell us about. Through it all, we tried to keep a positive attitude. After all, we were simply happy to be out of Jackson and we LOVE our new house.

If you have been around John David anytime in the past few months, you have heard about “THE ATTIC” da da da dum. Our house in Jackson had very limited closet and storage space, but an attic that stretched across the entire house. Anytime we had something that needed to go into storage, it would just get thrown up in the attic. When it came time to put the house on the market, I went through and boxed up all the “clutter” we had collected over the years. Of course, those boxes also went to the attic. Moving day finally rolls around and it took over two days and help from friends to get down the countless number of boxes, some of which had sat in that attic for over three years. At that point, John David SWORE that our next attic would NEVER get to that point again, and I finally accepted the truth of “Hi, my name is Heather Tullos, and I am a hoarder.” Life changing moments!

Needless to say, the first two weeks of moving in were spent opening and sorting through millions of boxes. I began planning “the world’s largest yard sale” and promised JD that I would donate almost everything that didn’t sell. The sale was a huge success. We made over $250.00 and donated everything that didn’t sell to the local goodwill. Surprisingly, I felt a huge sense of relief as I watched the boxes carted into the store. My new motto “Less IS more.”

With my new motto in mind, I began to unpack the baby room. I’m so thankful to have people in my life that love me. My amazing friends/ family hosted baby showers in Jackson & Memphis for me. WHO knew such a tiny human being requires SO much stuff?! Diapers, wipes, bottles, baby food, lotions, creams, blankets, etc. etc. I quickly realized my new concept of “less is more” was NOT going to work with this baby. It’s actually quite opposite. We made a rule that anytime one of us goes to Walmart, you buy a pack of diapers. Less is NOT more. And don’t even think about cloth diapers. NOT happening.

I was really nervous about switching doctors mid pregnancy. After talking to a few of the resident’s wives here in Mobile, I made an appointment at a doctor who they all recommended. As it turned out, I ended up loving her. We did an ultra sound and everything looked great. The ultra sound tech told us she weighed a little over a pound and looked like she was going to have some pretty long legs. : )

July 1, 2010
Jd started his first day as an intern at USA (University South Alabama). He set his schedule up to start work at the Veteran’s Hospital because Mobile doesn’t have a VA, meaning the residents have to travel back and forth to Biloxi, MS (about an hour fifteen minutes travel time one-way) to work for that month. The month was full of early mornings and late evenings, leaving little time family time, but we wanted to get that rotation out of the way before the baby arrives.

The month of July was a mixture of good and bad for me. The “morning sickness’ or what I like to call “ALL day EVERY day sickness” seemed to just intensify. Any “old wives tales” or “tips” you have heard about how to avoid the sickness, I tried. Winterfresh gum, eating a few saltines before getting out of bed, warm apple juice, peppermints, eating 6 smalls meals a day; you name it, I tried it. My doctor finally told me “Heather, I’ve prescribed every type of nausea medicine you can take while pregnant.” Towards the end of the month, the morning sickness eased but in its absence came severe migraine headaches. I’m hoping that I have maybe moved on from the horrible nausea and vomiting, but my doctor doesn’t give me a lot of hope that the headaches will get any better within the next three months. All I know is that little Miss Khloe better be a good baby once she gets here!! Mommy has suffered enough! : )

July 28, 2010
I had my 6 month checkup. I was really nervous about this appointment because we had to do the routine gestational diabetes test (and of course, this was the first appointment John David wasn’t able to come with me.) I have not had any complications to date but failing this test means you are put on a restricted diet. If you know me, you understand that this was just not possible. I don’t do healthy food. Baby likes fries.. and chicken nuggets.. LOL. Thankfully, I passed and headed straight to Wendy’s. Ha ha. The baby’s heart beat sounded perfect, I gained a pound and a half – which was the first time I hadn’t LOST weight since I became pregnant, so my doctor was happy. That night I over heard Jd tell a friend on the phone that it looked like I had two watermelons in my belly. Umm.. two? Really? Dang.
We have about 3 months to go until Bella is no longer an only child. : ) I’m at 28 weeks with only 12 to go. I realized Saturday that I’m 6 months pregnant and have not bought any maternity clothes. I still fit into everything I have but the belly is starting to protrude. Pics to come soon! : )

I know everyone is dying to see pictures of the new house. I clearly have control issues. And I like things to be perfect.  We are just no where near perfect.. yet. There are no pictures hung, none of the rooms have been painted and there are still rooms with boxes in it. Just as soon as things start to come together, I WILL take pictures – I promise.
To all my stalkers, I apologize it took me over a month to update you on everything. It’s been a busy month and I’ve been sick for most of it. Hopefully I’m over the worst part and can start actually enjoying being pregnant and can keep you better informed of what’s going on! : )

Love to you all. Thanks for reading!!

P.S. My birthday is in TEN days. : ) -

Goodbye Jackson!

We finally made it through graduation and all the celebrations! Without wasting anytime we threw all our energy and focus on MOVING.

First things first, Jd bought a new truck. It really couldn’t have come at a better time! He traded in his pride and joy Chevrolet Z71 truck for a much more gas efficient and reliable car right before Medical School. Since then he hasn’t stopped talking about how much he missed “his truck.” When he found this one he knew it was “the one.” We headed to Tupelo, MS to pick it up and he has not stopped smiling since that day!

On our way back we stopped in Batesville to pick up a MASSIVE 16x6 ft trailer Jd’s Dad built for us to move with. I sold our living and dining room furniture so Jd was pretty sure we could get everything into this one trailer. We started loading Sunday afternoon and into Monday. By the end of the day the trailer was loaded from top to bottom without an inch to spare and maybe only a little over HALF our stuff was packed.
Tuesday we headed to Uhaul to pick up the biggest trailer they had. We had to be at the attorney’s office at 3 to finalize the sell of Whitworth, so it was a mad dash to get everything loaded. 2:45 rolled around and we had everything but Jd’s tools and the clothes from the closet packed. We headed to the attorneys office, signed our names and it was OFFICIAL – we were homeless. We borrowed Jd’s Uncle Ricky’s truck and headed back to get the last of our junk. The sky was darkening and the thunder was rolling in and I was PRAYING for God to hold back the rain until we could get everything loaded. Apparently, I should have been a bit more specific. It’s 7 PM, everything is loaded and it’s now time to hook up to the Uhaul trailer and pull away from that dreaded house for the last time. It’s thundering and lightning and here comes the hurricane force rain and wind and all we need is to get hooked up to the trailer – BUT no, the ball on the hitch is too big for the trailer. At this point, Jd is soaking wet from head to toe as he gets in the truck to deliver the bad news that we have to go BACK to Madison to get his truck and come back, yet again. So not only is he soaking wet, but so is everything that’s in the back of Ricky’s truck and ALL our bedroom furniture in the back of his truck in Madison. Finally, at 11 pm we get in bed with a sigh of relief and know that we will NEVER have to go back to that house again.

The plan all along was to leave the trailer in Madison and wait to take it to Mobile until we could close on the house. Since we had to rent the Uhaul trailer, it had to be unloaded and returned within two days. This meant a spur of the moment trip to Mobile had to be made. Luckily, John David’s amazing Dad came down and followed him in the 2nd truck and they got both the trailers to Mobile and made it back to Jackson Thursday at 4 AM.

Thursday we found out today that we can close on the house in Mobile next Thursday. Until then we are staying with family and enjoying the R&R. We are so thankful to close the “Jackson, MS” chapter of our lives, and begin a new and exciting chapter in a new city with a new job, new house, and a new baby!

House Hunting in AL

With a little over 2 weeks left to be moved out of our house here in Jackson, we finally were able to go down to Alabama Friday and do some house hunting. We met at our realtor’s office and went over what we were looking for and, of course, you know I made a few lists.

List #1 “Necessities”
1.      4 bedrooms
2.      2 bathrooms
3.      Nice size closets
4.      Centrally located to the 3 hospitals John David will be working at
5.      Somewhat updated Appliances
6.      Nice backyard
7.      NO – OLD – HOUSES !!!

List #2 “Things we would love to have, but we can live without if we have to”
1.      Fenced Backyard
2.      Garage
3.      Pool
4.      Stainless steel appliances
5.      Granite Countertops

We saw about 15 houses that were a wide range of our price list. We knew we wanted to be close to the hospitals, but for the great location you rarely get a lot for your money. A few things we didn’t like with most houses:

1. Tiny backyards – if any. This is one thing we’ve lived without for almost 3 years and Bella made the executive decision that she MUST have a back yard.
2.   Homes that were at the top of our price range and still needed work: removing wallpaper, painting, updating appliances, replacing carpet, etc. We just don’t have the time or patience to do these kinds of updates.
3.  Too small for our growing family. We’ll be here for 5 years. We want something we can grow into, not something that is the same size we have now.

While house hunting online, I noticed a house that didn’t look like much on the outside but the inside had completely been renovated - plus, it had a pool. I was real unsure about it, but went ahead and added it to my list of what we wanted to see.

After viewing at least 8 or 10 other houses and feeling like we would never find everything we were looking for, we finally stumbled on this particular house. We walked inside and immediately it was love at first sight for me. This house had everything we were looking for. Gorgeous wood floors, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, brand new carpet in all FOUR bedrooms, updated bathrooms with tile-encased tubs, a great size backyard completely fenced in, a covered parking area in the back, AND a huge in-ground pool. The house is also in a great neighborhood centrally located to all 3 hospitals (and Walmart- HA). The ONLY problem was the curb appeal, but the wheels were already turning in me planning to fix that.

After a long (HOT) day of house hunting, we knew we had found what we were looking for. We made an offer on “the ugly house” as John David calls it. I spent the next 15 hours planning out where all our furniture would go in the house and biting my nails waiting to hear back from the seller. Finally we got the call and after some negotiating, he accepted our offer. Final sale, of course, is contingent on the home inspection, which will be done sometime this week.

Another perk to this house is we are able to close fast and will be able to move in on June 2, only one day after the closing on Whitworth.

I don’t think this moving process could have went any better for us. Things have really just fallen into place and God continues to keep opening doors for us. It’s been exciting, nerve-wracking, fun, and painful all at the same time. We couldn’t be any happier how everything has turned out and just continue to pray for a smooth transition.

We’ve got an extremely busy schedule over the next two weeks but like I have been saying, “we’re taking it one day at a time!” Stay posted for pictures of everything upcoming and I’ll get some pictures of the house on here soon.

Love you guys. Thanks for reading. : )

One Day At a Time

The home inspection was today. Our realtor said it could be a couple days before we hear back from the buyers. The final sale is contingent on the home inspection. The buyer could decide to back out of the contract or come back and request some repairs be made. I met the buyers today and they seemed very sweet. They appeared to be excited about the house and even wanted to know if we would consider selling them our furniture.

With only 25 days between now and then, we have A LOT going on.

May 20 / John David’s Long Coat Ceremony. His parents and sisters will be attending this very special and formal event. He will be presented with his “Doctor’s coat” that will read “John D. Tullos, M.D.” How exciting!

May 21 / Graduation from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. We have ALL waited a long time for this!

May 22 / Our family and close friends will be celebrating with us DOCTOR John’s official graduation from Medical School. His parents and I have dreamt of what this day of celebration would feel like when we were finally able to say “He MADE it!!”

We heard the baby’s heart beating at 150 BPM last Wednesday. Who knew such a tiny “thump, thump, thump” could sound so heavenly to expectant Mommies and Daddies! Every time we hear it beating away, it just about takes my breath away. Our next appointment is the most exciting of all. May 26 we find out if  this little “tad-pole” is a GIRL or a BOY. John David and I both think it’s a boy for some reason, but everyone else thinks it’s a girl. Either way, we are super excited! Monograms here we come! : )

June 1 / Close on our house @ Whitworth

June 12 / Baby Shower in Jackson hosted by Kristi, Ruth, and Susan. I can’t wait!

June 29 / University of South Alabama Welcoming Party on the USS Battleship.

July 1 / John David begins the first day of the next five years of our lives. Orthopedic Surgery Residency at USA in Mobile.

For now, we are focusing on finishing the sale of this house. One day at a time. We will worry about packing, loading, unloading and unpacking next. We will be accepting ANY and ALL help we can get come moving day! : )

Stay posted, LOTS going on. Will try my best to keep everyone updated as much as I can!

Selling Whitworth

image

We always knew whether we stayed in Jackson or moved out of state for residency we were ready for a new house. The plan was to get everything finished on the house and get it put on the market early January 2010 which would give us plenty of time to get it sold.

John David’s Residency interviews began in December and from mid November to early February we were in the car traveling more than we were at our house. Jd’s classes started back February-March and it seemed like every weekend we were supposed to work on the house, something came up and we couldn’t get to it.

We found out February 24 that we were having a baby and March 18 we found out we definitely were moving to Mobile, AL. By that time the morning sickness practically had me on bed rest. It wasn’t until mid April that we were able to finally finish up the final projects we had left on the house and by that time we were panicking.

April 23, 2010
We met with a realtor that one of my friends recommended to me over a year ago. To our surprise, he acted really excited about the house and assured us that it shouldn’t take very long to sell. He went out and put up the “FOR SALE” sign in our front yard and Jd and I were practically jumping up and down! Due to the rain, he decided to wait and take pictures of the house Sunday to get maximum sunlight and said it would be listed online by Sunday night. Monday morning I already had two appointments scheduled to show the house and Tuesday a third appointment scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.  At 6pm Wednesday evening, we got a call from our realtor saying the agent that just showed the house said he was pretty sure he would have an offer for us the next morning. SERIOUSLY? Words cannot even describe how excited we were to hear that!! Thursday morning the offer came in and by 4 that afternoon we signed the contract and sent it back to our realtor and BAM the house was SOLD. Three full days it was on the market. Amazing!

We close on the house June 1st. John David starts work in Mobile June 29th. Our hope all along has been to move in early June. Now we have to BUY a house. And soon! We’ve found one that we really like but we want to look at a few more before we make a final decision. We’re planning on going to Mobile sometime next week to do some more house hunting and hopefully sign a contract VERY soon! : )

The only way to summarize this amazing year is Jeremiah 29:11-14 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD.”

God has blessed us more than we deserve this year! I can’t begin to imagine where we would be without his love and mercy!

We are so excited for this year. What an amazing journey it’s already been and the JOURNEY doesn’t REALLY begin until we hear that little crying baby looking up at Mommy & Daddy!

Stay tuned for more updates!! Love you all!

We're MOVING!

March 25, 2010
After interviewing in cities all across the Southeast, we finally found out March 18th that John David matched into an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. We’ve been looking forward to this day since I can remember, still seems very surreal to me.

John David starts work July 1st so we’re planning on moving sometime in June. We met with a realtor last night and we officially have a “FOR SALE” sign in the front yard. Every time I look at that sign it makes me smile!! We’ve already started house hunting in Mobile, and so far we’ve found one house that we really like. We’ll be in Mobile for the next five years and then we’ll move again for a year for Fellowship. We are so excited about our future and what this year will bring.

I look back on the past four years of Medical School and I am so thankful for our wonderful family and friends. We are so blessed! Without your love and support, there’s no way we would’ve have made it this far! We couldn’t say “Thank You” enough!!

We have waited a LONG time for this picture : )
